Community Fedora Remix 13.1 “Lucky 13” live DVD/USB announcement
There are two basic guiding principle behind this Fedora Remix, first one is “beyond upstream” and “multimedia out of the box”, you can also think of it like Pimp My Ride version of Fedora 😉
To clarify a bit what “beyond upstream” means you have to know that Fedora is really close tied with upstream projects and Fedora developers won’t do anything that upstream doesn’t do, and “upstream only” mentality has lots good things going for it.
One of the deawbacks is that “upsteram only” makes for too conservative and old fashioned Desktop when look and feel of Desktop is concerned. Design of Fedora is great, I’m not talking about great artwork that Fedora Design team has made.
Fedora is just too closely tied to upstream and this is doesn’t allow much progress and experimentation on the look and feel side of things, that is why there are Remixes, because of this opportunity we decided to make an awesome looking Fedora Remix oriented for Desktop users.
This Fedora Remix is also very much influenced by Linux Mint and with its community.

mintMenu and DockbarX are two GNOME panel addons that make this Linux distro unique and these are the most obvious features that you will encounter first time you login.
– If you would like to test only mintMenu and disable DockbarX type this into terminal window:
gconftool-2 –load /usr/share/community-fedora-remix/gconf2/one-panel-settings.xml
– For standard GNOME look & feel just type this into terminal:
gconftool-2 –load /usr/share/community-fedora-remix/gconf2/default-panel-settings.xml
– And again for full mintMenu + DockbarX desktop this is the magic key:
gconftool-2 –load /usr/share/community-fedora-remix/gconf2/one-panel-settings-dockbarx.xml

RPM is located in /usr/share/community-fedora-remix/rpm but it is also very easy to install from source because it is python code so there is no compile.

My comment is written using F13 Live USB on Dell Inspiron 😀 but when i tried on my Dell Vostro (Broadcom wireless card) and F13 still could not detect the wireless card automatically like the Inspiron 😦 It is not like what you mentioned – * better hardware compatibility for broadcom wireless cards
Strange, but on all laptops that have broadcom and stock F13 didn’t work this Remix worked, but still I can’t test on laptops that I don’t have access to 😦
If you provide more feedback what is the exact model of broadcom and what driver it uses I can make sure that it works for next release out of the box.

I almost got mix up between F13 & FR 13 😀 . I downloaded and test it on my Dell vostro and the wireless (broadcom chipset) detect and run perfectly. Thanks again on this FR 13.
Love the Remix.
Have one issue. The key(s) for y and z are mixed up. Is this easily fixed and if so, how? Would like to make this my everyday distro.
Just to go Menu, Control Center, Keyboard and choose US keyboard, sorry for that, in next version this will be set by default.
I love remixes. I have my own… BUT the name on this REMIX is inappropriate. You have Fedora in the name, you have Community in the name. It makes it sound as if it is an official product of the Fedora Project and that is unfortunate.
Perhaps you would consider a name change?
Please look at older posts on this blog, current name is only a temporary one, I’m looking for a new name, hopefully soon new name will be chosen. Do you have any proposals?

Does it have built-in drivers for rt3572 or rt3070 based USB WiFi?
Nope, I don’t see there is a package for it yet in RPM Fusion repos 😦

I would suggest that you go to RPM Fusion mailing list and ask politely so that guys make a RPM package from these drivers, then I can include it in the next release.

Can I install proprietary Ati drivers on the Lucky 13 version, and do they work? I have heard rumors that Fedora 13 does not work with Ati proprietary drivers (and I don’t like the Radeon OpenSource ones)
I don’t have ATI hardware so can’t tell you, look around fedoraforums.org and fedora users mailing list, that is your best bet and ask other ATI Fedora users.
So, I installed this remix. But, I have some issues:
1. I don’t know if I did something wrong during the install, but it does not default to the layout of the live CD. I realize I can tweak it to try to reproduce the live layout, but shouldn’t I not have to? If I add the mintMenu to the panel the mintMenu directory of the live CD is nowhere to be found. Therefore, the icon is missing. Also, on the live CD, the open apps icons on the panel seemed to work like Windows 7 and I don’t know how to reproduce that.
2. It says I have updates to install. But, when I try to install them, it says something isn’t signed. When I try to force it with the admin password it accepts it, starts to download dependencies and then just asks me again in an endless loop. Therefore, I cannot install the updates.
Any suggestions?

The default with mintMenu and DockbarX reverts back to default Fedora GNOME menues, but this will be fixed in next release. You are right, it shouldn’t be that way, sorry.
The update issue I’m not sure why is happening but please try to make first update from the command line:
su –
yum update

I think I have found a solution to this issue.
Same issue. CD interface is different from installed interface. Again, when I boot up from netbook (using usb), strange phenomena happen. It doesn’t show the default applications.It seems to me that Fedora needs more work to do.
I didn’t know that there needs to be two places where to specify gnome settings, once is for live system and other is for installed system. This is fixed for next release, sorry for this issue.

thanks! I did so and it appears to work. but the menu does’nt look exactly as it did upon first install. (No little gnome footprint next to menu)(not a big deal!) Have another quick issue regarding updates. I have updated using su – yum update but software center is still prompting me of 135 available updates and it is prompting me for root password on each update. Is there a way around this? I really don’t want to type password 135 times!

And for fixing mintMenu just load mintMenu config file via:
gconftool-2 –load /usr/share/community-fedora-remix/gconf2/mintMenu.xml
This is also fixed for next release.
I am sorry, I don’t understand to fix the Linux Mint looks interface.I am very new to Fedora. Do I need to type something in terminal like Ubuntu/Linux mint or just copy and paste to terminal the following line?

try this, I had the same problem, there is a simple typo in the command posted here. I found this in the fedora forums and it worked for me.

notice the –load

Just found your community now. Great Remix! Haven’t tried it out yet but I use a very similar panel design (i.e. Single panel with Mint Menu, DockbarX and GNOME Do). I have just one small issue. During startup, I find the mintMenu to take quite a bit of time to load (And this slows down the entire panel loading process). Would you mind helping me out with this issue? Thanks!
I already have Goddard installed on my PC (Just did it recently and installed all the packages I need and I don’t want to do it again till Fedora 14 comes out).

This is great. I am a long time Fedora user and I have been struggling recently with configuring my Eee PC netbook. The wireless card has always been a pain and it has been conflicting with recent updates.
Now, the wireless is set up automatically with this remix. I do not have to do anything more than the default installation.

Try to bring some innovation in launching some projects @fedora hosted for icons and artwork to be developed. Try to provide a solid and hooky Design theme that translates the concepts and ideas behind your project, in other words, foment and support the creation of your own visual identitity!
These are great ideas but unless some new contributors join in for look&feel part for Fusion Linux I can’t do that myself, do you want to join?

I would love for you to join this project and help out, that way it would be released faster. The plan is to see if this bug can be fixed somehow and to work on release for Fedora 14.
